A brief history of Citizens Bank
Citizens Bank's trajectory has its origins in the High Street Bank, founded in 1828. This entity would become Citizens Savings Bank in 1871.
After 110 years, this financial institution had 26 branches in Rhode Island and in 1988 it became part of the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) group. Following the merger with RBS, Citizens Bank began its major expansion phase by strategically acquiring 25 banks.
This series of acquisitions increased their presence in New England, the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic region. Consequently, they grew from a notable regional bank to a national institution with more than $170 billion in assets.

Citizens Bank's commitment to its public and the communities where it operates has not changed. During the global real estate crisis that affected the entire economy, they took on the task of:
- Increase their investment by $1 billion in infrastructure and technology between 2008 and 2013.
- Optimize their geographic footprint by selling branches and underperforming assets.
- Transform its business mix to achieve greater balance between its consumer and business objectives.
- Improve its strategic focus, leaving behind assets unrelated to its area of influence, type of banking products and level of risk.
- Refine its in-branch service model by eliminating physical structures and expanding its mobile/online banking services.
In 2021, Citizens Bank purchased HSBC Bank's U.S. retail business, including nearly a hundred branches in several eastern states, acquiring nearly $9 billion in deposits and more than $2 billion in personal loans.
Also in 2021, the purchase of New Jersey-based Investors Bancorp was announced.
