History of Allstate Insurance

Allstate was founded in 1931, during the Great Depression. Insurance agent Carl L. Odell proposed to the CEO of Sears that he offer insurance by mail to reduce costs. Based on a tire sold by the company, Allstate Insurance Company was born.

Selling through the Sears catalog, they were headquartered in Chicago and had just 20 employees. Although in the first 2 years they reported losses, in 1933 they made a profit of $93,000 and an agent made the first in-person sale at the Chicago World's Fair.

After setting up their first office (1934), by 1941 they had 189,000 active policies and their premiums had tripled. By 1949 they had completed the Allstate Headquarters Building and the following year the slogan "You're in good hands" was born.

This beginning was followed by a long list of accomplishments over the next 70 years:

  • 1953-1957. Opens first office in Canada, begins offering residential fire coverage (1954) and establishes Allstate Life Insurance subsidiary (1957).
  • 1960-1970. In this decade they launch Allstate Enterprises Inc., form two new subsidiaries to handle the Canadian market (1964), found the Judson Branch Research Center (later renamed Allstate Research and Planning Center) in California (1966), move their headquarters to Northbrook (1967) and added 6500 insurance agents (1970).
  • 1972-1980. This period begins with the purchase of National First Corporation and its inclusion in the mortgage market. In 1975 they entered the Japanese market, in 1976 they formed Tech-Cor Inc. and launched 2 subsidiaries of their own: Northbrook Property and Casualty Insurance Company and Allstate Reinsurance Company Ltd (London). In 1980, it would become the 6th largest insurer in the USA.
  • 1981-1991. These years began with the purchase of Surety Life Insurance Company and Lincoln Benefit Life Company. Later (1984), they would launch the 'Neiborhood Office Agent' program, which took agents out of Sears stores. After reporting a net income of $946 million in 1987, they bring out the Allstate Advantage auto program that same year. After launching the slogan "Leave it to the good hands people" (1990) they ended up dropping their real estate holdings.
  • 1993-2000. At this stage, the company went public and Sears managed to sell 19.8% on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1995, Allstate became independent when Sears sold the remaining 80% of the shares to shareholders. After launching their website allstate.com (1996), they would found Allstate Federal Bank (1998), which would be dedicated to managing the insurer's operations. They ended the decade by implementing telemarketing/online sales and acquiring the personal accounts division of CNA Financial (renamed Encompass Insurance Company).
  • 2001-2010. In the new millennium, the company's bank begins operations offering savings accounts, MMAs and CDs (2001). That same year they introduce toll-free numbers and various online services. In addition, in 2002 they pushed for licenses to sell financial services. During 2010, actor Dean Winters spearheads the 'Mayhem' campaign, dedicated to the calamities of not having car insurance.
  • 2011-2020. This decade begins with the purchase of Ensure and Answer Financial for $1 billion. The following year, the company opens Allstate India in Bangalore, a headquarters that provides software and other outsourced services to its U.S. offices. In 2014 the telematics app Drivewise Mobile appeared, in 2017 they acquired SquareTrade (electronics insurer) and in 2020 they expanded their operations with the acquisition of National General Insurance.
