A Brief History of Synovus Bank

The history of Synovus Bank has a particular origin and dates back more than 130 years in Columbus (OH). It all started with a torn dress and bills thrown into the Eagle & Phenix mill. Seeing what happened, secretary/treasurer G. Gunby Jordan offered to hold the money for her and pay monthly interest on her deposits to the employee.

This would lead to doing the same with the other workers and to the creation of Synovus Bank. Among its most relevant milestones, we highlight:

• 1888. The businessman G. Gunby Jordan founds 2 banks: Columbus Savings Bank and Third National Bank.
• 1930. These entities are merged to form Columbus Bank & Trust.
• 1959. This new institution is the first in the U.S. to offer charge cards.
• 1974. With the creation of CB&T Bancshares, its services for credit card transactions in Georgia and The Total System (TSYS) software appear.
• 1988. The new entity begins acquisitions in other states with banks in Alabama and Florida. The following year it becomes Synovus Financial Corp. and is listed on the NYSE as SNV.
• 1992-2002. The expansion phase begins with the purchase of First Commercial Bancshares Inc. and its subsidiaries; the creation of Synovus Mortgage Corp; and the acquisition of National Bank of North Carolina and Bank of Nashville.
• 2005-2018. Through Synovus Bank of Tampa Bay increases its presence in Florida, consolidates 30 banking charters into one and merges 26 separate entities under the Synovus name.
• 2019. The bank acquires local Florida Community Bank for nearly $3 billion and renames the former bank's branches.
