In June 2020, SouthState Bank merged with CenterState Bank. The combination of the two companies meant a larger presence for the SouthState Corporation, growing from 168 branches to 250. This also meant reaching $34 billion in assets and achieving a market value of $6 billion.
Currently, SouthState Bank has branches in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Their financial services include personal banking, commercial banking, lending and investment products.
History of CenterState Bank
Before becoming part of SouthState Bank, CenterState has a history dating back to the late 1980s. In fact, the bank was born in Winter Heaven, FL, in 1989. At that time, it was a small entity called Community National Bank of Pasco County.
As it grew, its evolution led it to become the largest community bank in Florida and to change its name (2007) to CenterState Bank NA. After that, its expansion has a few milestones that chronicle its previous development before the merger with SouthState Bank:
- Between 2010 and 2014. In these years, its owners bought several entities in the area: Centerstate Bank Central Florida (Kissimmee), Federal Trust Bank (Sanford), Central Florida State Bank (Belleview), First Guaranty and Trust Company of Jacksonville, Valrico State Bank (Vlarico), Gulfstream Business Bank (Stuart) and First Southern Bank (Boca Raton).
- 2016-2019. This phase was marked by more acquisitions: Community Bank of Florida (Homestead), 1st National Bank of South Florida (Homestead), Platinum Bank (Brandon), Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida (Sarasota), Gateway Bank of Central Florida (Ocala), Gateway Bank of Florida (Daytona Beach), Harbor Community Bank (Fort Pierce), Sunshine Bank (Plant City), Charter Bank (West Point, GA), and National Bank of Commerce (Birmingham, AL).
History of SouthState Bank
This financial institution was founded in 1933 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, under the name of First National Bank.

This name was maintained throughout the 20th century and it was not until 2002 that it was changed to South Carolina Bank and Trust, moving its headquarters to the city of Columbia, in the same state. First National Corp. would also change its name to SCBT Financial Corp.
In 2007, the entity acquired The Scottish Bank. In 2013, it merged with First Financial Holdings of Charleston.
In 2014, SCBT Financial Corporation became SouthState Corporation and SCBT Bank became the current SouthState Bank.
